Transforming Primary Mathematics: A Practical Guide is a companion volume to Mike Askew s hugely successful "Transforming Primary Mathematics," and provides an evidence-based approach to teaching and learning mathematics that takes research and transforms it into practical classroom resources. By focusing on a small set of consistent principles and practices, this book will help teachers to develop a coherent approach to teaching mathematics that will give them the knowledge and insight to select and adapt other resources to their classroom.

This practical guide aims to develop the teaching tripod themes of tasks, talk and tools. By packing each of these through a collection of classroom activities that are organised around the major strands of the curriculum (including number, calculations, shape and space, measures, data handling), the following objectives are addressed:

  • Helping primary school teachers (in-service or in initial education courses) appreciate the importance of careful coordination of tasks, tools and talk in support understanding of mathematics;
  • Providing practical classroom examples that support teachers in developing their understanding of the 'teaching tripod' through using this in the classroom;
  • Assisting teachers to appreciate the need for a coherent and consistent approach to teaching and learning mathematics that goes across the primary years and provides a sound foundation for later learning;
  • Showing how the activities and suggestions here are grounded in research that has demonstrated an impact on pupil learning.

Written by an author with experience of primary teaching but also with over twenty years of experience as both a producer and consumer of research in mathematics education, this book will be of use to both practicing teachers and those on undergraduate and post-graduate courses, as well as primary school mathematics leaders."

Fully updated to reflect the new curriculum, the revised edition of Transforming Primary Mathematics sets out key theories and cutting-edge research in the field to enable teachers to take a fresh look at how they teach mathematics. The book encourages teachers to reflect on their own beliefs and values about mathematics, and asks them to question whether their current methods meet the needs of all learners, and the challenge of having high expectations for all. It provides clear, practical approaches to help implement fundamental change in classroom environments, and offers motivational teaching styles to ensure meaningful mathematics learning. Chapters take an inspiring, sometimes controversial, and often unconventional look at the subject of mathematics, by: endorsing the use of a 'new mathematics' - one based on problem solving, modelling, inquiry and reasoning, not on abstract rules, memorising, and regurgitation arguing that there is more to maths teaching than 'death by a thousand worksheets' challenging norms, such as the practice of sorting children into sets based on their perceived mathematical ability asking whether mathematical ability is innate or a result of social practices examining what a 'mastery' approach might entail highlighting the role of variation in supporting learning advocating an environment where teachers are encouraged to take risks. Transforming Primary Mathematics is for all primary school teachers who want to make mathematics welcoming, engaging, inclusive and successful.

Globally, mathematics and science education faces three crucial challenges: an increasing need for mathematics and science graduates; a declining enrolment of school graduates into university studies in these disciplines; and the varying quality of school teaching in these areas. Alongside these challenges, internationally more and more non-specialists are teaching mathematics and science at both primary and secondary levels, and research evidence has revealed how gaps and limitations in teachers' content understandings can lead to classroom practices that present barriers to students' learning. This book addresses these issues by investigating how teachers' content knowledge interacts with their pedagogies across diverse contexts and perspectives. This knowledge-practice nexus is examined across mathematics and science teaching, traversing schooling phases and countries, with an emphasis on contexts of disadvantage. These features push the boundaries of research into teachers' content knowledge. The book's combination of mathematics and science enriches each discipline for the reader, and contributes to our understandings of student attainment by examining the nature of specialised content knowledge needed for competent teaching within and across the two domains. Exploring Mathematics and Science Teachers' Knowledge will be key reading for researchers, doctoral students and postgraduates with a focus on Mathematics, Science and teacher knowledge research.

This book develops a framework for discussing primary school teachers making changes to their understandings and practices. The framework has been developed to allow the complexity of external and internal aspects of change processes to be explored in a holistic way.

External factors influencing teachers include increased specification of the curriculum, changing demands for styles of pedagogy and a rhetoric of Lifelong Learning. Such factors have to be looked at in relation to individual teacher's internal responses to mathematics. For many primary school teachers mathematics is a subject that causes concern; its place within their personal biographies may be uncomfortable and replete with memories of confusion, pain and limited success. Professional understandings of mathematics build upon the understandings from personal histories. Discussing teacher change within the interplay of the external and internal is inherently difficult. Responses to this difficulty have tended to take the form of simplifying the task and dealing with the external separately from the internal.

This book will be of interest to a wide range of people working in the field of primary mathematics education, including policy makers, Initial Teacher Education lecturers, Master's students and researchers, practising primary school teachers and those engaged in the management of mathematics in primary schools. While the context of the book is specific to a period of time when a National Numeracy Strategy was being introduced into schools in England, the themes that the chapters tackle are broader and consider issues of interest to anyone concerned with the development of mathematics teaching.

Mathematics often gets a bad press. Describing someone as 'calculating' or 'rational' is hardly as flattering as being labelled 'artistic' or 'creative' and mathematicians in movies or novels are often portrayed as social misfits who rarely get the guy or girl. No wonder some folks say 'oh I don't care for mathematics, I was never any good at it' with a wistful sense of pride. Yet professional mathematicians talk of the subject differently. They look for elegant solutions to problems, revel in playing around with mathematical ideas and talk of the creative nature of mathematics. As the Russian mathematician Sophia Kovalevskaya said "It is impossible to be a mathematician without being a poet in soul." So why is there such a gap between the views of everyday folks and professional mathematicians? Part of the problem lies in how most of us were taught mathematics in school. The mathematics served up there is presented as a series of de-contextualised, abstract ideas, wrested from the human struggles and interactions that gave birth to the ideas. Through looking at some of the history of mathematics, psychological studies into how we come to know mathematics and key ideas in mathematics itself, the intent of this book is, if not to make the reader fall in love with mathematics, then at least to come to understand its nature a little better, and perhaps care a little more for it. In short, this book explores the human side of maths.
